You Want to Travel, But Where to Start?

international travel is exciting! It might seem daunting, but with a good plan, you’ll be on your way to an incredible adventure. Here’s a 10-step program to guide you:

1. Dream & Discover Your Destination: This is the fun part! What kind of trip are you craving? Do you want history and culture, relaxation on a beach, or adventurous activities? Consider your interests, desired climate, and how long you want to travel. Research a few places that pique your interest. Don’t be afraid to think big but also consider destinations that might be a bit easier for a first timer, perhaps somewhere English is widely spoken or with well-established tourist infrastructure.

2. Budget Blueprint: Once you have a few destinations in mind, start researching the approximate costs. Factor in flights, accommodation, food, activities, transportation within the country, and a buffer for souvenirs and unexpected expenses. Having a clear financial picture will help you narrow down your choices and set a realistic savings goal.

3. Passport Power! This is non-negotiable for international travel. If you don’t have a passport, or if yours is expiring within six months of your planned return date (many countries require this!), start the application or renewal process immediately. It can take several weeks, so don’t delay. You’ll need to fill out forms, provide evidence of U.S. citizenship (like your birth certificate), get a photo ID, and a passport photo.

4. Visa Victory (if needed): After picking your destination, check if you need a visa to enter that country. Visa requirements vary greatly by country and your nationality. Research this early, as obtaining a visa can also take time and involve additional paperwork.

5. Health & Wellness Check: Schedule an appointment with your doctor or a travel clinic for at least 4-6 weeks before your trip. They can advise you on any recommended vaccinations for your destination and provide prescriptions for any medications you’ll need to bring. It’s also a good idea to get a letter from your doctor outlining any medical conditions and a list of your medications (with generic names).

6. Secure Travel Insurance: U.S. Medicare and Medicaid generally don’t cover medical costs overseas. It’s highly recommended to purchase comprehensive travel insurance that includes emergency medical care, medical evacuation, and trip cancellation coverage. Compare policies carefully to ensure they cover your specific needs and activities.

7. Book Your Journey: Once your documents and health checks are in motion, it’s time to book your flights and accommodations. Consider booking early, especially for popular destinations or during peak seasons. Look for reputable hotels or trusted accommodation platforms. When booking lodging, prioritize safety by reading reviews from other solo female travelers, choosing central, well-lit locations, and ensuring there’s 24-hour reception.

8. Money Matters Abroad: Notify your bank and credit card companies of your travel dates and destinations to avoid any security flags that might freeze your accounts. Ask about international transaction fees and ATM withdrawal limits. It’s wise to carry a mix of cash (some local currency, some U.S. dollars for emergencies) and multiple credit/debit cards. Always keep some emergency cash separate from your main wallet.

9. Pack Smart & Light: Create a packing list based on your destination’s climate and activities. Focus on versatile, mix-and-match clothing. Comfortable walking shoes are a must! Keep essentials like medications, a change of clothes, and important documents in your carry-on bag. Consider using packing cubes to maximize space. Don’t forget universal adapters for your electronics.

10. Safety First, always: Before you go, research local customs, laws, and safety concerns for your destination. Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) with the U.S. Department of State to receive alerts and for easier contact in an emergency. Share your itinerary with a trusted friend or family member back home. While traveling, stay aware of your surroundings, trust your gut, and avoid oversharing your location on social media. For transportation, use licensed taxis or reputable rideshare apps.

Enjoy the entire journey, from planning to completion!
